Here is the letter I sent to the Inspector General of the South Florida Water Management District

I implore you! Please stop the releases from Lake Okeechobee. After years of drought we have to think of a more sensible ways to store this water for future use. Reservoirs? cisterns? There has to be some method that is ecologically friendly. Maybe just letting it stay and filter into the aquifer. This excerpt is from today's Sun-Sentinel.

Relieving pressure on the lake's 70-year-old, earthen dike flushes away water that could be needed for times of drought. It also threatens to throw off the delicate mix of salt and fresh water in coastal estuaries, which can lead to fish kills and other environmental damage.

Manipulating water levels in anticipation of storms has gotten water managers in trouble before. In 2006, the corps lowered the lake in anticipation of a busy hurricane season, but instead got two years of drought. Low lake levels led to watering restrictions that remain in place.

Obviously, there is more far reaching implications than I know. Finally, nature has a way off taking care of itself please stop interfering with the natural course of things!

Thanks for listening
