Bye, Bye 70s! Painted Paneling

BEFORE

Our house was built in the 1970s. Among its original features are yellow shag carpeting in the study, harvest gold tile in the master bath and the dark wood paneling pictured above in the living room. When we first saw this house, we feel in love with the layout instantly. Which is why the paneling didn't scare us away! We figured we would replace it with drywall once we settled in. But life got busy - having babies and raising babies. And the financial aspect of replacing the paneling seemed so overwhelming.

From a decorating standpoint, the room never really came together. I hesitated to put anything on the walls, because of the paneling. I had a vision for the room but struggled to bring it to life. Our thoughts then turned to painting the paneling. But the 12 foot ceiling in this room was intimidating! We had a local painter come out to give us an estimate. His price for painting the room fit nicely within our budget. And now we have a beautiful new room, that looks just as I had always imagined it would!

AFTER

I chose Sherwin Williams Comfort Gray (SW 6205) for the paneling, Sherwin Williams Dover White (SW 6385) for the trim, shelves and stair railing and the drywall above the paneling was color matched to a Valspar paint color (a beige color).

I commented to Dave not only does the room look better, it makes our "trashy" furnishing look better as well! And when I say trashy, I mean basically everything in this room was either given to us, bought at a yard sale or was a curbside treasure!

The painters also made repairs to the exterior and the gave our saltbox a fresh coat of red paint. The exterior color is Sherwin Williams Fireweed (SW 6328). Which I've come to learn is the consumer version of the paint color used for the Golden Gate Bridge.

We're so in love with this room now! It looks like an entirely different room. What a great way to start Spring, with a completely refreshed space!

Happy Monday All! I'm going to be spending my week in "power user" training (oh joy!). But I did want to share our latest trash to treasure before & after with you.

AFTER

With a little sanding and painting, this dresser has taken its place as the best piece of trash Dave has ever brought home!

Trash to Treasure - Hubby Brag!

While my projects have been piling up, Dave has been hard at work on his own! His most recent project was this trash to treasure armoire. He started working on it so fast, I didn't get any before pics!

The drawers were busted, so Dave nailed those back together. Then he got to work painting. He used a color from Valspar (New Black).

And here is the armoire in its new home! We decided to put it in the family room, replacing the trash to treasure dresser that had been in the corner. An upgrade of sorts!

I'm so proud of my hubby and the work he did on this project!

He's got quite the eye for cool trash.

Backyard Art Project - Part 2

Last week, I shared the beginnings of our backyard art project with a curbside table Dave found. After seeing this post at Granny's Attic, I knew our curbside find would make a great chalkboard table for the kids!

We bought a can of chalkboard paint from AC Moore using a 50% off coupon (love those coupons!). Dave painted the table top according to the directions on the can.

After a few days wait, the table was ready for the kids to enjoy!

Dave and I thought we'd let the kids get involved in our latest trash to treasure makeover.

It's a large table with leaves. We have an idea in mind for the table, but the kids don't know yet :)

Trash to Treasure Glaze Projects - Chair & Mirror

BEFORE

Inspired by Brooke at All Things Thrifty, I decided to take the plunge into glazing. My first attempt was this trash to treasure chair Dave found. The cushion was dirty (made even moreso by our cats sleeping on it) but the chair itself was in good shape.

AFTER

And here she is now! I went back and forth on a color for the longest, but decided to go with Rust-Oleum Aqua in a satin finish. For the glaze, I used Ralph Lauren as Brooke recommends in her Glazing 101 tips.

I covered the cushion with a damask fabric from Jo-Ann Fabrics. With help from my Mom, who knows all things fabric - thanks Momma!

After I placed the finished chair in the dining room, my attention was drawn to my trash to treasure mirror hanging over the dresser next to the chair. It seemed to blend into the wall. It needed some color.
